The DFDS ro-ro vessel Ficaria Seaways is equipped with a scrubber system to clean exhaust gas. The vessel went into dock in June 2009 where it was extended by 30 metres and had the scrubber system installed. Installed after a 21 MW two-stroke MAN B & W engine, it is by far the world's largest scrubber installed on board a ship.
The design work has been carried out in close cooperation with marine engineers from DFDS to ensure that the scrubber system fits the existing ship installations in the best possible manner to lower the costs for retrofitting. MAN Diesel & Turbo has also participated intensively in the design work to ensure a smooth and safe operation of the engine and turbo generators at all engine loads with the additional exhaust gas back pressure generated by the scrubber.
A modular and flexible exhaust gas scrubber design with a high degree of operational flexibility as well as future possibilities for upgrading of the equipment has been chosen for Ficaria Seaways. The system is able to switch between scrubbing with sea water and scrubbing with fresh water.
